According to the philosopher
Heraclitus, the only thing constant in life is change; the Nigerian music
industry has evolved over the years and so has fashion. I came across an
interesting picture a few weeks ago of some ladies at the disco in the 80’s,
dancing to the music of Chief Ebenezer Obey dressed in Iro and buba. However,
the fashion of the 70’s and 80’s is a lot different from what we have now.
These days we see way too much skinnnn (not that there weren’t there in the
80’s, but we seem not to have too much of a problem with it at all).
As the fashion has changed so also has the music. Now its all about the
beats; only a handful of musicians write these days. There’s more freestyle on
the airwaves than music with content. Its either about having money, spending
money, making money, having babes, popping rose, ukwu, doing ‘d thing’, etc.
and the videos try their best to depict what we hear in the songs 90% of the
time.
Majority of the fashion style in
Nigerian music videos is all about showing SKIN, UKWU and other supposedly
private assets *wink.
However,
there are a few Nigerian music videos with really lovely fashion style that
literally blow my mind anytime I see them and I’m going to list my top 10:
. Sisi
Eko – Dare Art Alade ft. Flavour
.
Johnny – Yemi Alade
. Aye –
Davido
. Man
of the year – Phyno
.
Pakurumo – Wizkid
. Emi
ni baller – Chidinma, Suspect & Ill Bliss
. Ukwu
– Timaya
. If
you ask me – Omawunmi
. Ima –
Kcee ft. Dbanj
. I
Garrit - Orezi
