Dawnn Karen is currently a celebrity fashion psychologist, a professor of fashion psychology at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and has most recently launched the Fashion Psychology Institute.

Dawn Karen has always been interested in the fashion industry ever since she attended a performing arts high school. She was always well-dressed when she went to school and wanted to be like Tyra Banks when she grew up. She was an entrepreneur at an early age as she designed clothes during high school and developed her own jewelry line when she attended Bowling Green State University. When she moved to New York to attend Colombia University, she worked in public relations during New York Fashion Week and evolved her jewelry line.
The concept of fashion psychology is not limited to what the individual wears because as you know from reading my articles on style; it is about who we are. Dawnn Karen uses her concept of fashion psychology to also provide creative direction for her clients' style in relation to websites, business cards, interior decorating, etc..
While we would love to believe that starting a new field and concept would make the pursuit of your dream easier, Dawnn Karen didn't become successful with ease as she faced many challenges along the way just as any other entrepreneur has. One of her biggest challenges was conquering ageism. When people think of a psychologist, they think of a lady with glasses and white hair. Dawnn Karen is a millennial so it was difficult for people to accept her new concept and her youthful image, especially in two industries where the perceptions of professionals are very distinct., She also faced the issue of sexism. Dawnn Karen wasn't considered to be as smart as a guy and has been told she needs to be aggressive.
Dawnn Karen felt she always had to prove herself. She focused on marketing her new concept of fashion psychology globally since it was difficult to break into the United States market, as she felt the international markets accepted foreigners quicker than natives. It was fitting for her to pursue countries outside of the US, in which she spent last year traveling to 7 different countries that weren't fashion capitals to highlight other cultures. She did case studies to develop her theories and show her existing clients how she applied fashion psychology to different cultures.
Dawnn Karen is well sought after media experts and gives different media interviews to promote her concept of fashion psychology and has only recently been featured in Life & Style Weekly magazine. On the quest to share her ideas, Dawnn Karen went to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and met with the Social Sciences chair to discuss launching her field as she realized she needed to be aligned with a school. However, professors who have been in the fashion industry for a much longer period than Dawnn Karen, didn't think it was necessary to reinvent the wheel even though people wanted to learn about fashion psychology so she instead taught her concept in a course that already existed at FIT.

Many international students outside of FIT wanted to know how to pursue the field and didn't know how to if they didn't attend the school, which is how Dawnn Karen came up with the idea for the first ever Fashion Psychology Institute. The purpose of the institute is not to compete with other schools but to give people an opportunity to take the fashion psychology courses that aren't offered in America or abroad. The Fashion Psychology Institute was created for professionals and students interested in the field and to have Fashion Psychologists in every country. Students learn how fashion psychology can be placed in various areas of life. When Dawnn Karen launches her book on fashion psychology, it will be used as a textbook for students to learn how color, relationships, business and entertainment are all relative to the psychology of fashion.
Another challenge of the fashion psychology concept is that people think it can only be applied to fashion and modeling. She believes you have to have a vision, be fearless, think without limitations and understand who she is in order to understand how it can be applied to all areas of life. Dawnn Karen believes fashion psychology is in everything we do and it's in everyday life. You can wake up and dress depending on how you're feeling by choosing to wear clothes that either fit your mood or enhance your mood. The institute will assist in overcoming this challenge because it will bridge the gap of perception and reality for those who are not a visionary because the idea is often outside of someone's schema, making it difficult for people to see it.
Dawnn's advice to female entrepreneurs is that you can do anything a man can do and use the qualities you already have to your advantage. She believes we can use our beauty to grow our businesses. Dawnn Karen says that we don't have to be aggressive when we can use our calmness and nurturing to close a deal and to use our femininity in business because we were born women and we can accomplish anything we want just the way we are. Dawnn Karen also stresses the importance of protecting your work and businesses so no one can steal them.
