6 Fashion Lessons for the Man in Your Life

1. SETTLING DOWN DOESN’T MEAN HE SHOULD STOP SPRUCING UP.

This happens to a lot of women, too—but no one does “dressed down” like a lazy man in a long-term relationship. You’ll probably love him just the way he is, but admit it: do the oversized polos and daddy pants really do it for you? Men tend to take things for granted when they’ve got love in the bag—but why should he go frumpy on his special someone when he used to suit up for a roomful of strangers?

2. IT’S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP IF HE’S FASHION-CHALLENGED.

Men don’t like to ask for help—not even when they’re lost in a strange city without a map (especially when they’re lost in a strange city without a map). But when it comes to fashion, you, his wife/girlfriend/daughter, are probably the first person he’ll seek out. Make it easy for him to broach the subject—coax it out of him if you have to. There’s no shame in getting fashion advice!

3. SHOPPING IS A PRACTICAL SKILL HE SHOULD MASTER.

It’s hardly just a “girl thing.” Any man who plans on dressing spiffy needs to hone his taste level first. The shopping process will sharpen his sartorial wits: selecting a garment, trying it on, determining whether or not it is flattering, and choosing other pieces to complement it. Practice makes perfect.

4.IT NEVER HURTS TO TRY MEN’S ACCESSORIES, EVEN IF THEY AREN’T “HIS KIND OF THING.”

But with the right attitude and intelligent taste, they just work. Take note: Jacob is a man’s man, and he rocked not one but two rings (both by high-end jeweler David Yurman), not to mention a chain necklace.

5. IF HE MAKES AN EFFORT TO KEEP FIT, THE FASHION WILL LOOK EFFORTLESS.

Insert Photoshop quip here. No, really--he doesn't need to have those hallucinogenic Hollywood or Nollyw Nolly wood abs (as welcome as they are). The idea to exercise with enough regularity so that he stays healthy and lays a good foundation for the clothes.
6.THE MAN MAKES THE CLOTHES, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

It all boils down to confidence. Sometimes a guy can be dressed to the nines but lacking in the swagger, so the clothes swallow him up. The coolness of an outfit depends on the X factor of its wearer, so encourage your potential fashionisto to show off his personality—and ultimately, trust his instincts.
